At one point or another, everyone struggles with their appearance. For many, it can be an ongoing battle to be happy with the way you look. If you’re self-conscious about your appearance, it’s perfectly normal and fortunately, there are things you can do to help yourself.
Focus On What You Like About Yourself
It’s easy to focus on the negative aspects of your appearance. The “flaws” you notice are going to stick out to you more than anything else. However, it’s time to start looking beyond what you don’t like. Take a look at your appearance and point out all the things you do like.
There are plenty of features that make up you and they are all deserving of your love and attention. As you acknowledge what you like about yourself, you might consider writing down a list of things. Writing it down solidifies the idea in your mind and it helps you appreciate yourself more. You can also go through and list out what you like about yourself every time you look in the mirror.
Do What You Can to Make Changes
If you don’t like something about yourself, consider what you can do to change it. Not all aspects of your appearance can be changed, but some things can be. For example, if you are self-conscious about the way your teeth look, you can have them fixed.
Braces and other methods will straighten out your teeth, remove gaps, fix crowding, and much more. Invisalign uses clear aligners so others won’t notice you’re wearing braces. This makes it easier to transition to new teeth without feeling more self-conscious.
Stop Comparing Yourself to Others
Again, it’s so easy to look at other people and compare yourself. However, this will only continue to hurt you. There are a lot of things that impact a person’s appearance. It comes from genetics, lifestyle, and even socioeconomic status. You can’t control everything that affects your appearance and you can’t achieve everything that someone else has. If you find yourself comparing, take a moment to acknowledge the thought and then simply let it go.
Remind yourself that you are an individual and you don’t need to measure yourself to others.
It’s hard when you aren’t happy with the way you look. It can affect the way you behave around others and it certainly has an impact on your mental health. Working through negative feelings related to your appearance can take time, but it’s worth it to keep pushing forward.
