Starting a business is tough—am I right? But when you have to overcome as many obstacles as women often do, it can be even more difficult. Thankfully, times have changed, and there are now ample opportunities for women to create successful, fulfilling businesses that will give them the chance to earn a living. Here are three such examples.

Startup Founder

In this area, the field is still wide open for women. According to CityLab, a mere 17 percent of all startups have a female leader. This means that a skilled, intelligent woman has plenty of opportunities to break into the field and make a name for herself. Keep in mind, of course, it also means that there are plenty of challenges in the way. Founding a startup is tough under the best of circumstances, but in situations like these, sexism clearly still reigns. As a woman, you will have to work twice as hard for your progress. If this is your chosen field, be prepared.

Franchise Owner

According to Franchise Gator, the last decade saw the number of female franchise owners nearly double as franchisors recognized the traits and capabilities women possess that allow them to be successful business partners. This is why so many franchises have started to specifically target women. Franchises have systems in place that make it easier to run and operate a business, but those come at a cost. You are more limited in your opportunities to turn a profit thanks to fees and purchasing agreements. All women who are interested in starting a franchise should do their due diligence and make sure that any legal agreements they sign protect them and that the terms are reasonable.

Small Business Owner

More and more women are starting small businesses these days. According to WBENC, more than 12.3 million businesses are owned by women, an increase from the 402,000 businesses which were owned by women nearly 40 years ago. This massive spike has occurred as society’s views have, thankfully, changed when it comes to what women are capable of doing. The most important thing about starting a business is that you find your passion and plan appropriately. Starting a small business can require a massive amount of work and a huge investment of time and capital, so make sure you are ready before doing so.
The opportunities for women to run businesses are growing every day, and your chance is out there. Find what you want to do and seize the opportunity. Thankfully, many of the old barriers just don’t apply anymore. So what are you waiting for? Take the opportunity and run with it!
